PVC class: there is one thing that should be clarified. When the UNI EN 12608 norm speaks of "PVC class" according to climatic areas, it refers to "duration" (preservation of the physical and mechanical characteristics of the material in time) and does not refer to the insulating properties of the window. The application of this norm is limited to white profiles only (and beige) with smooth surfaces. Therefore it does not apply to profiles with covered, embossed or co-extruded acrylic surfaces.
2 classes exist: “M” and “S”, according to the climatic areas.
PVC CLASS according to UNI EN 12608 |
MODERATE climate "M" |
RIGID climate "S" |
Annual solar radiation on a horizontal profile |
< 5 GJ/m2 |
≥ 5GJ/m2 |
Average temperature of the hottest month |
< 22 °C |
≥ 22 °C |
Therefore in Europe two kinds of PVC profiles exist, destined for windows, as indicated in the norm UNI EN 12608 on "classification, the requirements and tests methods for PVC-U profiles for the production of doors and windows".
By analysing the data of ENEA, Italy fals in the climate area S (severe), not due to its solar radiation, but due to the average temperature of the hottest month (exceeding 22°C). As far as radiation is concerned, Italy is apparently a mixed climate country such as France. The test system for classification in class S or in class M is based on a more or less extended exposure to artificial light.
In the photo the label of the manufacturing company of the profile "Salamander" used by "NURITH" in "S" class is highlighted.
“EN 12608 S” is highlighted, therefore the reference norm and class “S”
Here is the certificate of the "PVC class" used by NURITH.
Furthermore, we must remember that the UNI norms are not laws, but they should be complied and respected.
