Home burglaries up by +127%

This figure has been taken from the 11th edition of the «Diary of transition» by Censis.

Home burglaries have more than doubled in the last 10 years.

Asti, Pavia and Turin are the worst hit. A house is broken into every two minutes. A very worrying figure in the last year, with record figures registered for this crime.

Burglaries are on the increase in Milan (+229% between 2004 and 2013), Florence (+177%), Rome (+120%) and Bologna (+104%).

Considering the number of crimes compared with resident population, Asti (9.2 burglaries in homes for every one thousand residents), Pavia (7.1 for every thousand), Turin (7.1 for every thousand) and Ravenna (7.0 for every thousand) at the top of the list of the most affected Italian provinces.

And the provinces in which home burglaries have increased the most in the last decade are Forlì-Cesena (in first position, +312,9%), Mantova (+251,3%), Udine (+250,0%), Terni (+243,7%) and Bergamo (+234,3%).

Among the largest cities, the greatest increases were registered in Milan (+229,2% from 2004 to 2013), Florence (+177,3%), Turin (+172,6%), Padua (+143,3%), Palermo (+128,4%), Venice (+120,9%), Rome (+120,6%), Bologna (+104,5%) and Verona (+103,4%).

The Censis document highlights how burglars always choose much more secluded homes because nowadays banks, post offices and high streets are fitted with safety systems such as TV cameras, discouraging those who want to commit a crime or identify the individual. Also because they are sure of finding some kind of loot especially in a season of crisis and strong uncertainty towards the future, in which Italians have reduced consumption levels and have preferred to keep their savings "under the mattress".
